so, i finally posted pics of A Study of Asian Themes in their painted forms. i figured they were better displayed as a series instead of an all inclusive shot like the previous photo. anyway, here's an art history note for everyone. the great wave coaster is obviously an interpretation of a print of the same name by katsushika hokusai. same deal with the volcano coaster, although the title of hokusai's print is Fugaku Sanjurokkei: Gaifu Kaisei (Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji: Pleasant Winds, Fine Weather). none of the coasters are exact copies of any artwork...which would probably be illegal or something. regardless, i certainly learned a lot about the artistic elements used in asian artwork by studying it and sculpting my own interpretations. maybe i have a future in tile design...
